SHS curriculum shift gains educators’ support for enhancing skills and flexibility

The revised Senior High School curriculum introduces a streamlined set of core subjects and flexible elective options, aiming to enhance student proficiency.

As the Department of Education (DepEd) formally rolls out the revised Senior High School (SHS) curriculum, educators across the country are voicing strong support for the program’s fresh focus on learner-centered flexibility, modern skills, and simplified subject structures.

Bryll Regidor, an advocate for curriculum development, described the new curriculum as well-intentioned, recognizing it as a response to the long-standing issues of silent discrimination and subjective criticism faced by students under the previous system.

Moreover, he emphasized that the new mandate empowers technical education and status to a more flexible and skills-oriented framework.

Key Feature:

The SHS program will now operate under two simplified tracks: the Academic Track and the Technical-Professional Track. Electives previously associated with separate strands such as Arts and Sports will be retained but integrated under the Academic Track.

Among the most groundbreaking features is the streamlining of the SHS core subjects, reducing the previous 15 subjects per semester to just five essential subjects per year. These include:

  • Effective Communication (Mabisang Komunikasyon)
  • Life Skills
  • General Mathematics
  • General Science
  • Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino.

The restructuring aims to free up time for deeper learning and help students better grasp foundational competencies that prepare them for real-world challenges.. While implementation details are still being finalized, pilot testing is expected to begin this school year 2025-2026. More so, DepEd assures that these changes are based on extensive consultations with stakeholders across the education sector.
